FAQs

What levels does the TCF cover?

The TCF evaluates your French ability across all six CEFR levels (A1 to C2):

  • A1–A2: Beginner/elementary, where you can handle basic everyday communication.
  • B1–B2: Intermediate/independent, where you can manage more complex discussions and written texts.
  • C1–C2: Advanced/proficient, showing the ability to understand and express yourself fluently in almost all contexts.
What is the difference between TCF, TCF Canada, and TCF Québec?
  • TCF (Test de Connaissance du Français): A general French language proficiency test designed for non-native speakers. It’s often used for academic purposes, job applications, or personal assessment.
  • TCF Canada: A version of the test adapted for Canadian immigration applications. It is recognized by IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) and evaluates listening, reading, speaking, and writing.
  • TCF QuĂ©bec: Specifically required by the Ministère de l’Immigration, de la Francisation et de l’IntĂ©gration (MIFI) for immigration to QuĂ©bec. It focuses more on oral and written skills relevant to the QuĂ©bec immigration process.
What skills are tested in the TCF?

The core test usually covers:

  • Listening comprehension – understanding spoken French in different situations.
  • Reading comprehension – interpreting texts such as articles, ads, or instructions.
  • Language structures – grammar and vocabulary knowledge tested through multiple-choice questions.

In addition, depending on the purpose of the test, candidates may also take optional modules:

  • Speaking – face-to-face tasks with an examiner to assess fluency and accuracy.
  • Writing – written exercises ranging from short notes to structured essays.
